Killearn
A Complete Strip and Re-Roof with Upgraded Solar on a Rural Stirlingshire Bungalow
Location
Killearn
Type of Work
- Full strip and re-roof
- Solar panel removal and refit
- Additional solar panels installed
- Dry ridge and hip system
- Roof ventilation upgrade
- Detached garage re-roof
Project Overview
This large L-shaped bungalow sits on a generous plot on the edge of Killearn, with views out towards the Campsie Fells. The original red concrete tiles had reached the end of their working life, and the owners wanted a roof that would look sharper, last longer and carry more solar.
Everything came off: the old tiles, the ridges and the existing solar panels. We then re-roofed the main house and the detached triple garage in Marley Edgemere Duo in Anthracite. It gives the clean, modern look of slate without the cost. The solar went back on, extra panels were added, and the finished roof is backed by our 15 year guarantee.
The Challenge
- Weathered concrete tiles with heavy moss and lichen growth across every elevation
- Mortar-bedded ridges and hips that were worn and breaking down
- Existing solar panels that had to be removed carefully and stored before the strip could start
- A large, complex roof with several hips and valleys across the house and garage
- The owners wanted more solar capacity, so the new roof had to be set up to take extra panels
- Poor roof ventilation, with no allowance for airflow in the original build

Our Solution & Work Carried Out
Materials used:
- Marley Edgemere Duo interlocking slate-effect tiles in Anthracite
- Kytun dry ridge and hip system, Copper finish
- Tile vents for better roof ventilation
- New and refitted solar PV panels
Full strip of the existing roof
We removed all the old concrete tiles, ridges and hips from the main house and the garage, taking the roof back to a clean base for the new covering.
Solar panels removed and refitted
The existing solar panels were taken down safely before the strip and reinstated once the new roof was on.
Additional solar panels fitted
The owners took the chance to expand their system, so we fitted extra panels alongside the originals for more generating capacity.
Re-roofed in Marley Edgemere Duo Anthracite
Edgemere Duo gives a slim, slate-style look with the speed and value of an interlocking tile. The Anthracite colour makes a clear contrast with the white render and suits the rural setting.
Kytun dry ridge and hip system
All ridges and hips were finished with a Kytun dry fix system. It replaces mortar bedding, so there’s no pointing to crack or fall away over time, and it stays secure in all weathers.
Vents added for improved airflow
We added tile vents across the roof slopes to keep air moving through the roof space and cut the risk of condensation.
Detached garage re-roofed to match
The triple garage was stripped and re-roofed in the same Edgemere Duo Anthracite, with the rooflights worked back in, so the whole property now has one consistent finish
