Bespoke Slate Wishing Well
A Handcrafted Conical Roof Finished in Cupa Heavy 3 Natural Slate
Location
Inchinnan
Type of Work
Bespoke slate installation
Project Overview
This bespoke wishing well project involved the installation of a handcrafted conical slate roof using 16×10 Cupa Heavy 3 natural slate.
Although smaller in scale than a traditional roofing project, the level of precision required for a conical structure makes this type of work highly specialist. The aim was to create a durable, weather-resistant roof with a clean, traditional finish that complements its natural surroundings.
We always enjoy working on unique projects like this, where craftsmanship and attention to detail are key.
The Challenge
Conical slate roofing requires a very different approach from standard pitched roofs.
Key considerations included:
Forming a true circular conical shape
Ensuring consistent slate spacing around the full circumference
Correctly reducing slate sizes to maintain symmetry
Achieving a watertight finish at the apex
Maintaining the visual balance of the roof from all angles
Because every slate course gradually reduces as it rises, precision cutting and positioning were essential to achieve a smooth, uniform finish.
Our Solution & Work Carried Out
Using 16×10 Cupa Heavy 3 natural slate, we carefully formed and installed the slate courses to suit the conical roof structure.
The work involved:
Preparation of the timber roof structure
Accurate setting out to ensure symmetrical slate positioning
Installation of natural slate in gradually reducing courses
Secure fixing throughout to ensure durability
Finishing detail at the apex for weatherproofing and visual impact
The Cupa Heavy 3 slate was selected for its quality, strength and natural aesthetic, making it ideal for a bespoke feature structure like this.
Conical Roof Formation
The wishing well roof was carefully set out and formed to achieve a true circular shape, ensuring a balanced and proportionate appearance.
Cupa Heavy 3 Natural Slate Installation
16×10 Cupa Heavy 3 slates were installed in reducing courses to follow the conical structure. This required careful cutting and positioning to maintain symmetry.
Precision Slate Alignment
Each slate was positioned to ensure consistent spacing and alignment around the full circumference of the roof.
Apex & Finishing Detail
The top of the roof was completed with detailed finishing work to ensure weatherproofing while maintaining a clean, traditional appearance.
Secure Fixings & Weather Resistance
All slates were securely fixed to provide long-term durability and resistance to wind and weather exposure.
Full Timber Renewal
Replaced all worn roof timbers, restoring the structure to modern standards and ensuring a strong, stable base for the new slate.
